Eating local food can be challenging. But 15 volunteers for the Locavore Nation experiment spent 2008 finding ways to change their diets and lifestyles to accommodate a local menu, sharing their experiences with readers and listeners via regular blogs and weekly podcasts on National Public Radio show The Splendid Table’s website.

Launched by cookbook author and The Splendid Table host Lynne Rossetto Kasper, Locavore Nation examines how people shop and eat from coast to coast. The volunteers agreed to obtain 80 percent of their food from organic, seasonal sources within 500 miles of their homes for a year. Living in a range of climates, participants had to locate sources of local produce and learn to preserve food.

“We wanted a diverse mix of people—single, married, married-with-children—to keep food journals, measure progress, talk to each other and exchange ideas with our readers and listeners,” Rossetto Kasper says.

Through experimentation, education and information exchange, they found ways to eat locally and affordably. Read about and listen to their challenges, successes and tips.
