While you slumber, you’re making a mess of  your pillow with tears, drool and skin oils. (Ew.) How do you keep your pillow clean?

Manufacturers usually recommend dry cleaning, but this chemical-laden cleaning method can strip natural oils from fillings, making them brittle and weak. Do a little maintenance: Clean pillow exteriors frequently to remove soil before it penetrates. For extra protection, follow these easy recipes.

Pillow freshener
1/2 cup cornstarch
3 to 4 drops lavender oil

Place cornstarch and oil in a jar. Cover tightly and shake well. Shake a generous amount on pillow surface. Leave overnight and vacuum with hose attachment the next day.

Super strength pillow paste
Still not fresh? Try this stronger remedy.

1/4 cup cornstarch
1 to 2 tablespoons water

Stir ingredients together to form a paste; spread onto soiled area. Let dry overnight, then brush or vacuum away residue.

Pillow tip

Use an old pillowcase instead of buying a pillow protector. Just safety-pin or sew the edges to secure it and put another pillowcase over it.
